You need extra space for swelling and drainage.
- Swelling: When a piercing is initially done, there is often swelling in the surrounding tissues. Longer jewelry accommodates this swelling, preventing the jewelry from becoming too tight, which can impede blood circulation and hinder the healing process.
- Drainage: You body will try to heal the fresh wound and send fluids around the piercing site. Longer jewelry allows for proper drainage, reducing the risk of complications like abscess formation or the trapping of fluids, which could lead to infection if not removed properly.
So what will happen if you do get a shorted jewelry which is "exactly your size" ?
Swelling and Compression: too short jewelry will compress your normal swelling making it abnormal, contributed with bleeding and pain just like on the picture. Irritation and Inflammation: Short jewelry may cause increased friction and movement within the piercing, leading to irritation and inflammation of the surrounding tissues.
Embedding: can occur if the jewelry is too tight, causing the skin to grow over it and the piercing will fall into your body.
Increased Risk of Infection: Insufficient space around the jewelry due to swelling or tightness can create an environment conducive to bacterial growth.
What should you do?
Wear longer jewelry from the begin untill the piercing is properly healed. If you are already facing an issue, don't wait longer and come for a consult to a professional piercer.
